The idea of a war book in Canada dates back to the Great War and the British pre-war preparations. All the colonies and territories had local defence schemes including draft legislation and regulations that would be used in the event of war. The only blanks were for things like date and the name of the enemy country or countries.
Fantastic, Ed. Thanks so much. I notice several old "war book" files in the Library and Archives Canada online catalogue. It would be fascinating to compare the pre-Second World War war books with the Cold War editions. I also hope that, one day, a student does a project examining the evolution of the War Book during the Cold War.
brilliantly informative.
